Renew My Church- Renew My Faith- Sunday Mass Schedule Change

Last year as our parish completed the five month long Parish Transformation process I began to introduce the Archdiocesan wide “Renew My Church” initiative.  Parish Transformation (PT) allowed our parishioners to enter into time of serious prayer, discernment, and decision resulting in a very clear plan for how we will organize our parish and prioritize our needs, dreams, and goals.  PT also prepared us to do the work of Renew My Church (RMC) which will restructure the entire face of our Archdiocese.  Both of these efforts will take several years for the goals to be fully realized and in many ways this labor of love will never be complete because we are a living and dynamic community of faith.  We will always need to discern where the good Lord wants us to be.

The scope of PT and RMC share many things and each has its own unique focus.  A common goal for both is that every parish community and Catholic institution within the Archdiocese of Chicago remains (and becomes) a vibrant, vital, and living witness of our Catholic Christian faith.  We need to be vigilant on how we use our resources, gifts, and talents in our baptismal mission to evangelize the world.  Mother Church has always been on a journey with, for, and towards our Lord Jesus Christ.  We are not a static institution. We are the Body of Christ.

In order to prepare our local community to embrace and fully participate it this mission our faith community of All Saints- St. Anthony Parish will adjust our Sunday Mass schedule beginning July 2, 2017.  After much prayer, discussion, deliberation, and discernment one (1) Sunday mass will be eliminated. The Sunday Mass Schedule will be 9:00am in English and 11:00am in Spanish.  The Saturday evening anticipatory mass at 5:00pm will remain unchanged.

Clearly this change will affect what has been the Sunday routine for many parishioners.  We will closely evaluate how the mass change impacts the quality of our parish life, our spiritual growth, and shared Church mission.  If the mass schedule change proves detrimental to our parish mission and overall health this decision will be revisited before the beginning of the new liturgical year the first Sunday of Advent 2017.  Please review the following items which form the foundation for this change.

  • On average just over 400 people attend Sunday Mass each weekend.  About 100 people attend each mass. Our church seats 350 people.  With just one mass in English on Sunday we will double the number of liturgical ministers (lectors, Eucharistic ministers, altar servers) providing for a more properly serviced Liturgy.
  • It costs the parish approximately $10,000 per year for one Sunday Mass (musician fee, priest stipend, host/wine, utilities).  This money will be redirected to hire a liturgical musician who will lead us in song and develop a choir for our 9am English mass adding to our vibrancy and attractiveness.
  • During the school year our CCD program’s Family Mass (2nd Sunday of each month) is very popular with families with children.  Having just one English mass on Sunday will encourage fuller participation of our CCD families every Sunday year.
  • The changes to our Sunday Schedule will be evaluated weekly based on attendance, collection, and participation.  Any mass intentions already scheduled for 11:30am after July 2nd will be transferred to the closest 9am Sunday Mass.  The number of Mass intentions accepted for all Sunday masses (including 5pm Saturday) will increase to accommodate the schedule change.  The fee for mass intentions ($10) will remain the same.
